old hyderabad

I drive through the old city, the streets narrow and winding, the buildings a mix of old and new. The smell of food and incense, the sound of the azan, the feel of history and tradition. I think of the way the city has changed, the way it has grown and evolved. The new buildings, a jarring note, the old ones, a reminder of the past. I drive past the Charminar, the monument a symbol of the city, the surrounding streets, a maze of shops and stalls. The smell of biryani and kebabs, the sound of laughter and chatter, the feel of the city, alive and vibrant. And yet, despite the changes, the city remains the same, the essence of it, the spirit of it, unchanged. I don't know what the future holds, but I think of the way the city will continue to evolve, the way it will continue to grow and change.

@rehanqureshiI grew up in Hyderabad and have spent the years since trying to figure out what that means. Writing about memory, family, and the places we carry.
