the evening walk

He took the same walk every evening, for twenty years. It was a habit, a ritual. He didn't think about it, didn't even notice it. He just did it. The walk took him through the neighborhood, past the houses and the trees. He saw the same people, the same dogs, every day. It was comforting, in a way. He felt like he was a part of something, like he belonged. He didn't think about his life, didn't think about the past or the future. He just walked, one foot in front of the other. The world slowed down, and he was just a part of it. He didn't feel old, didn't feel young. He just felt...present. The walk took him to the park, where he would sit on a bench and watch the sunset. It was a small pleasure, but it was his. He didn't need anything else. He just needed this, this moment, this walk. He sat on the bench, closed his eyes, felt the warmth on his face. The world was quiet, still. He was just a part of it, a small part. But it was enough.
