the office birthday cake problem

Someone organizes it. There is always one person who organizes it, whose identity rotates and who is never officially appointed. They order from the same bakery on Rajpath. Butterscotch, chocolate, or "mixed fruit," which is a euphemism for a cake that tastes like none of the fruits depicted on the box.
You have to eat the cake. Not eating the cake is a social act that requires more explanation than it's worth. You stand in the small crowd around the desk and receive your piece and say something about it.
The person whose birthday it is always looks somewhat ambushed, as if they'd forgotten it was their birthday, which is not possible.
There's a photo. Someone takes a photo.
I have eaten more butterscotch cake than I have wanted to in my adult life because of this system. I would change nothing about it.
