two old friends

They sat across from each other. Not much to say. Just small talk. The kind of conversation you have with someone you used to know well. But it's been years. They both knew it. They both felt it. The conversation was careful. Like they were both waiting for the other to say something. But neither did. They just kept talking about nothing. The weather. The news. Everything but what they really wanted to say. It was like they were both waiting for the other to make the first move. But neither did. They just kept talking. And talking. And talking. Until it was time to leave. They stood up. Shook hands. Promised to keep in touch. But they both knew it was a lie. They wouldn't keep in touch. They wouldn't talk again for years. Maybe not ever. But for now, they just stood there. Smiling. Pretending like everything was fine. When it wasn't.
