faith and doubt

I've been thinking a lot about faith lately, about the gap between the faith I inherited and the faith I've chosen. My father's faith is a simple one, a faith that's rooted in tradition and community. He never questions, never doubts. But I'm different, I think. I question everything, doubt everything. I'm not sure if this is a result of my upbringing, or if it's just my nature. I think about the times I've attended the mosque, the times I've recited the prayers. It's all so familiar, so comforting. But at the same time, it's also unfamiliar, unknown. I'm caught between these two worlds, the world of my father and the world of my own making. I don't know how to reconcile these two faiths, how to bring them together. Maybe it's not about reconciling them, maybe it's just about living with the tension, the uncertainty. I'm still trying to figure it out, still trying to find my way. The streets of Hyderabad are still familiar to me, the smell of biryani, the sound of the azan. But the faith, the words that once flowed so easily from my tongue, are still elusive, still unknown.

@rehanqureshiI grew up in Hyderabad and have spent the years since trying to figure out what that means. Writing about memory, family, and the places we carry.
