a missed call

I stared at the phone for a long time. A number I didn't recognize. No message. Just a missed call. I thought about calling back. But I didn't. The number is still on my phone. I haven't deleted it. I'm not sure why. It's been a few days now. I find myself thinking about it when I'm driving or taking a shower. Who was it? What did they want? I'll probably never know. Sometimes I think about calling the number. But what would I say? I'm not even sure I'd recognize the voice on the other end. It's strange how something so small can weigh on your mind. A simple missed call. I've missed calls from people I know before. This feels different. Maybe it's the not knowing. Maybe it's just my imagination. I've been thinking about a lot of things lately. Things I used to do. People I used to know. It's funny how a small thing like a missed call can make you think about all that. I might call the number tomorrow. Or next week. Or never. I don't know. For now, it's just a number on my phone. A reminder of something I don't understand. I've been trying to remember the last time I got a call from a number I didn't recognize. I think it was a few years ago. A wrong number. The person on the other end was polite. Apologetic. This feels different. This feels like something I'm supposed to do something about. But what? I've been thinking about a lot of things lately. Things I should have done. Things I shouldn't have done. A missed call from a number I don't recognize is just another thing to think about. I'm not even sure why I'm still thinking about it. Maybe it's just something to do. Something to keep my mind off other things. I've been watching a lot of TV lately. Just flipping through channels. Not really watching anything. Just background noise. Sometimes I think about turning it off. But I don't. It's just easier to leave it on. Like the number on my phone. It's just easier to leave it there. For now. I don't know what I'll do tomorrow. Or next week. Or next year. I just know that the number is still on my phone. And I'm still thinking about it.
