waiting outside the hospital

He sat in the driver's seat. Engine off. Waiting. The hospital loomed in front of him. A sprawling complex of buildings. He had been waiting for hours. The sun was starting to set. Casting a golden glow over everything. He stared out at the hospital. His mind wandering. Thinking about the person inside. Wondering how they were doing. If they were okay. If they would be okay. He didn't know. All he could do was wait. And hope. The hospital was a place of uncertainty. A place of fear. A place of hope. He had been to hospitals before. But it was never easy. Never simple. He sighed. And looked down at his hands. They were clasped together. Tight. Like he was trying to hold onto something. He wasn't sure what. Maybe it was just a sense of control. Something to hold onto in a situation that was beyond his control. He looked back up at the hospital. The sun was dipping lower in the sky. Casting long shadows across the parking lot. He waited.
