inherited and chosen faith

I think of the faith I inherited from my parents, the faith that was passed down to me like a family heirloom. It's a complex thing, a mix of tradition and culture and personal belief. But what happens when the faith I inherited doesn't entirely match the faith I've chosen for myself? I think of the times I've questioned the practices, the rituals, the dogma. I think of the times I've felt like an outsider, even among my own family. I don't know how to bridge this gap, or if I even need to. I wonder if it's possible to hold both the inherited and the chosen faiths, to reconcile the past with the present. I think of the way the Urdu word for faith, imaan, feels in my mouth, like a soft whisper. I think of the way the English word for faith, faith, feels like a declaration, a statement of fact. I don't know what it means to have faith, really. I only know that it's a journey, a path that winds and turns, a path that I'm still walking.
