the weight of stillness

she sat cross-legged on the floor her back against the wall her eyes fixed on some point outside the window. the late afternoon sun cast a warm glow over her face illuminating the gentle curves of her features. her chest rose and fell with each breath the only movement in a body that seemed carved from stone. he sat opposite her his legs stretched out before him his gaze drifting between her face and the floor. the air was heavy with the scent of old books and stale air. neither of them spoke the silence between them a living thing that pulsed with its own rhythm. as the sun dipped lower the shadows in the room deepened and the silence grew thicker like a fog that seeped into every pore. in this quiet darkness their bodies seemed to dissolve into the space around them leaving only the faint outline of their presence. the moment hung suspended a drop of water poised on the edge of a leaf waiting to fall.
